Cheshire County Department of Corrections is seeking Corrections Officers for full-time positions.

Definition: Officer is responsible for the care, custody and control of adult offenders within
this institution.
This description includes the responsibilities of probationary Officers, Certified Officers,
Corporals, and Sergeants. A Correctional Officer I, will be required to perform, at a minimum,
the following functions;

Primary Functions:
• Supervises all inmate activities to ensure a safe and secure environment both inside
and occasionally outside of the facility
• Processes incoming inmates on a computer, completes intake paperwork, issues
clothing and other approved articles, fingerprints, photographs and controls the
• Advises inmates on correctional facility rules and regulations and enforces the same
• Maintains control room and dayroom logs
• Answers phones, communicates by radio and written correspondence
• Clears all visitors with regard to safety and security
• Inspects cells, living areas, common areas, multi-purpose rooms and remaining physical plant
for security breaches and hygiene standards
• Transports inmates inside and outside of the facility
• May be required to conduct armed transports of pre-trial inmates
• Maintains inmate order, discipline, safety and security
• Conducts several inmate counts
• May be required to use physical intervention techniques in subduing out of control
• Utilizes handcuffs, restraints and other correctional related equipment
• Performs other similar or related duties as required and directed

Knowledge, skills and abilities:
Must have a positive attitude and strive toward effective human relations. Individuals must
possess the physical and mental ability to perform the primary functions listed above or be able to
explain and demonstrate that the individual, with or without reasonable accommodation, using
some other combination of skills and abilities to posses the necessary requirements to safely

Minimum Qualifications:
Must eventually meet correctional officer certification standards in order to remain employed.
Officer certification requires that an oath be administered. High School education or equivalent,
valid driver’s license and approved background check.
